Description

This puzzle is as it was presented by Juno in the IPP17 exchange in 1997 even though the copyright on the engraving is dated older as 1990.

(No.1) does not mean there is only 1, it means it’s the first of many of these designs that Junichi has created over the years.

The photo is of the actual puzzle and the small paper that was with it when given in the exchange. I have covered part of the paper which shows the pieces to avoid spoilers.  There's also a closer photo of one of the pieces that has engraving on it.

Juno said that he knew that the standard 6 piece burr had already been fully analysed by computer by Bill Cutler so he set about creating a different type of 6 piece burr.  He knew that the end profile of the assembled 6 piece burr was a 2 x 4 grid and he realised it was possible to divide that grid pattern in different ways. Hence, he designed his first board burr back then in 1990.

That makes it 35 years ago and to our knowledge, this may have been the first time the concept of board burrs had been thought of.

Eventually, the board burrs were also analysed; work done by Frans de Vreugd and Bill Cutler in early 2002; many of them Juno’s designs.

Wood – laminated plywood with engraving of puzzle details.  This includes a copyright dated 1990.
Size –  each piece is about 75mm long.

This puzzle is another burr from the collection of Ray Mead. It may take me a very long time but I’ll be listing more from this collection in future.

The burr is as I found it in its plastic bag. I took it out of the bag to check the first piece would move and it does. But I did not continue the solve.
Although it was not originally included, I have a printed solution to send with the puzzle.

Cigar Puzzle by Marcel Gillen 2003
The object is to remove the band off the cigar.  Designed by Marcel Gillen and made by Bits and Pieces. This puzzle is in its original packaging as Marcel presented it in the exchange at IPP23 in 2003. It has been played with a couple of times and the cap of the cigar case is a bit dinged but it still screws on ok. The labelling is paper stuck to a cigar case but it’s in pretty good shape. Just a couple of crinkles from when it was originally glued I think.  You can see some wear ...
