Description

For the discerning collector of mechanical puzzles, this is a premier opportunity to acquire a near-complete set of the Original Marine Series, designed by the legendary Akio Yamamoto.

Renowned for his ability to blend organic, fluid aesthetics with rigorous logic, Yamamoto’s "Marine Series" remains one of the most visually stunning chapters in the Hanayama catalog. These are the iconic two-tone (gold and silver) finishes, prized for their high-polish cast metal and tactile weight.

The Collection Includes:

This lot features five of the six original designs, plus a rare promotional variant:

  • Cast Shark: A Level 1 "Entry" masterpiece. Features a silver shark jaw and a gold mackerel. A perfect study in smooth disentanglement.
  • Cast Seabream: (Level 1) An elegant "Kissing Fish" design. Requires a delicate touch and spatial awareness to separate the silver and gold scales.
  • Cast Starfish: (Level 2) A beautiful interlocking of a silver starfish and a leaping gold dolphin.
  • Cast Claw: (Level 2) A heavy, silver crab claw grasping a gold ring. A classic Yamamoto "hook and loop" logic puzzle.

  • Cast Reef: (Level 3) Often considered the highlight of the series. Two gold gobies must be navigated through a complex silver coral branch.
  • Special Edition: Mars & Venus "Reef" Keychain: A unique variant of the Reef puzzle, featuring the silver coral attached to a collector's keychain with the male/female gender symbols. This is a harder-to-find piece often missing from standard retail sets.

Collector’s Notes:

  • Designer: Akio Yamamoto (Award-winning designer of Cast Vortex and Cast Coaster).
  • Mechanism: Disentanglement / Assembly.
  • Material: High-quality zinc alloy with gold and silver electroplating.
  • Condition: These pieces show the characteristic "mirror finish" of the original releases. The plating is crisp, and the movement remains fluid and precise.
  • Display Value: Unlike modern monotone cast puzzles, this series’ two-tone contrast makes it a standout display piece for any shelf or cabinet.

“Yamamoto puzzles are not just challenges; they are sculptures. The Marine Series represents the pinnacle of his early work, focusing on the harmony between the predator and the prey, the reef and the fish.”

Investment Potential

As the puzzle market grows, authentic Yamamoto designs from the late 90s/early 2000s continue to appreciate, particularly in "lot" form where the thematic consistency is preserved. This bundle offers a significant "instant collection" value compared to sourcing individual pieces.

Shipping is paid by buyer and determined at close of auction.
