Description

Yoh Kakuda’s A long wait poignantly presents us with a sitting figure with flat expression who – if the name is to be believed – has been waiting for quite some time.  It’s a double delight.  First is its distinctive, emotionally evocative figural depiction that is unique among all Karakuris.  Second is its incredible craftsmanship – the key step is nearly invisible, but utterly wonderful once discovered and amazing in how smoothly it moves.  All original packing material is included.

Asymmetric Cube -Arrow- (2020) - Hideaki Kawashima (Karakuri)
For those familiar with Kawashima’s Bars Box puzzles, Asymmetric Cube -Arrow- may be the prettiest of the series.  -Arrow- has the intricate multi-step solution and precision wood craftsmanship that you expect from a Bars Box puzzle.  However, -Arrow- is described as the “twin” to Asymmetric Cube -5-, and as with -5-, -Arrow- similarly features some particularly surprising movements.  Further, and most notably, -Arrow- features a distinctive, especially cool arrow pattern in different a...

Compasses - Karakuri Idea Contest 2017
As with the best of Karakuris, this 2017 Karakuri Idea Contest winner beautifully integrates its theme with its solution.  It has two parts: a box containing a concealed compartment and a mechanical compass.  The box has a partial arc of a circle on top.  It’s both a puzzle to solve and a puzzle to consider the mechanic behind it.  All original packaging included. Ordinarily I'd include Karakuri's product description of the puzzle, but it is rather spoilery.  Please click through on the...

Gentleman Crocodile (2022) - Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri)
Yoh Kakuda is especially well-known for puzzle boxes that feature whimsical animal creations.  Gentleman Crocodile is one of Kakuda’s best, perfectly coupling theme and puzzle.  Thematically the puzzle presents us with its incongruous and humorous namesake: a crocodile wearing a hat.  Further, its solution is not only connected to its theme, but gives the solver an unexpected wonderful visual surprise along the way.  All original packing material is included. Karakuri product description:...

Vaulting Horse - Karakuri Idea Contest 2010
Vaulting Horse is from the second ever Karakuri Idea Contest, in 2010.  It depicts a miniature vaulting horse of the sort you might see in a gymnastics competition.  It has two parts: the vaulting horse platform (including a cloth inlay on top) and its springboard (with a functional spring action).  It was crafted by Hideaki Kawashima, reflecting one of his early works as a member of the Karakuri Creation Group.  To the best of my knowledge, Vaulting Horse has never been on the auction marke...
