Description

Yoh Kakuda’s description on Karakuri’s Japanese language website reads “‘物語性のある動物ものが得意’“, which ChatGPT translates to “I'm good at animal-themed stories with a narrative”.  Anteater is one of Kakuda’s early works that showcases this style.  It presents its namesake in a whimsical fashion with a delightful solution that’s tightly coupled to its subject.  It’s wonderful.  All original packing material is included.

Karakuri product description:

This work was designed as a Christmas present for 2009.
When I understood the habits of anteaters I felt nostalgic.
They are not the same as humans and they live a different life, but I felt acertain humanism in them, and made this work

Size: 44×175×40mm

Material: Burs wood and Karin

Condition: The lid of the packaging looks like it once had a sticker on it that was removed (see photos)

Urashima (2013) - Tatsuo Miyamoto (Karakuri)
Urashima is a delightful, hard-to-find 2013 Karakuri creation by famed craftsman Tatsuo Miyamoto.  As with the best Karakuris, its theme and solution are beautifully coupled.  The puzzle box is inspired by the ancient Japanese tale of Urashima Tarō, a fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded with what feels like only a few days with the princess Otohime in the underwater Dragon Palace.  When he returns home he discovers that centuries have passed, and upon opening a mysterious box give...

Sheep (2014) - Shiro Tajima (Karakuri)
Shiro Tajima is celebrated as one of the most inventive and distinctive early Karakuri Creation Group artisans. His designs often draw from Japanese heritage, with puzzles that revel in tight tolerances and elegant motion.  Sheep, his 2014 Karakuri Christmas puzzle, is from his series inspired by animals from the signs of the zodiac.  The highly stylized, abstract form of the sheep reflects Tajima’s minimalist conceptual aesthetic, and the solution (to its multiple compartments) is elegant...

Sad Tempura - Karakuri Idea Contest 2016
The best Karakuri Idea Contest winners combine theme and puzzle.  Sad Tempura does so in a particularly satisfying and humorous way, showing an enlarged serving of a single piece of shrimp tempura.  This very rare puzzle has three parts: the shrimp tempura, the small bowl that you would dip it in, and the platform on which they both sit.  But there’s a problem: the tempura doesn’t fit in the dipping bowl.  The puzzle box solution is thematically connected to this conundrum.  The work is...

Dashi - Karakuri Idea Contest 2018
Dashi, like many of the best Karakuri Idea Contest winners, reflects an item from Japanese culture.  In this case Dashi is designed to look like a traditional hand plane style bonito shaver.  It has three parts: the main cutter box, a lid that covers it, and a piece of bonito fish.  The box has a drawer that doesn’t seem to come out, which is where the bonito flakes would accumulate for an actual bonito shaver.  As with the best Idea Contest winners, the theme and puzzle are connected, her...
