Description

I only ever made two of these puzzles for the IPP Design Competition (San Francisco) in 2009.  It’s a fun puzzle that can be very confusing to assemble from pieces even if you see the assembled shape.

Several years ago Scott Peterson (at my insistence) made a very nice run of them and later Tom Lensch (at John Rausch’s insistence) made a run, with some featuring Holly, Ebony and Rosewood!

I recently was able to acquire some 1/2” size stock and decided to make a few.  This can be considered my first puzzle project in over seven years and over 12 years since I first made any ‘Barb’s Cube’ puzzles!

I suppose you could call these mini or pocket size, although they are not micro like Allan Boardman puzzles.  I used a variety of woods in many different patterns, my favourite are the ‘Checkered Cube’ version but the design looks really nice in any combination.

I lacquered and hand buffed them with a coat of ‘Conservators Wax’ to make them pop.  This Puzzle was named after my loving wife Barb.

Note:  This copy is the last copy I made in this recent run of 20.

Woods used in this copy are:

Yellowheart-Wenge-Padauk

This classic design was one of my earliest puzzle builds in the early 2000’s that I made for Bill Cutler. It features 18 pieces with four solutions, however finding one will definitely keep you busy for some time!I’ve always wanted to revisit it but in a smaller scale, I used a 3/16” unit size with the overall size being approximately 6” x 4”.The woods used (see last photo) were salvaged from an old upright piano that I layed out the keys in a wall hanging.  Slipfeathers in the tray a...

Singmaster Packing - David Singmaster (1971) by John Devost
This design by Professor Singmaster (sadly passed away in 2023) was my very first puzzle offering at CubicDissection back in 2005, it’s 25 pieces that can be packed in the box 22 ways.I was going through my ‘Salvaged Piano Wood’ (see last photo of my keyboard wall hanging, that I made from our upright piano that was produced in the ‘roaring ‘20’s!), so I figured I’d make more of this classic puzzle with this antique lumber. As always everything gets my ‘triple buffing finish’ th...

Tube It In - William Strijbos by John Devost
It seems hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since I first made a small run of this clever packing puzzle design in 2006.  William has graciously allowed me to offer up another run as there were only a dozen copies made in 2006.The original metal version was William’s exchange puzzle at the IPP21 in Tokyo. This version is made using many wood varieties and includes a Stand.  The entire puzzle has been ‘triple buffed’ giving it a very nice sheen.Overall size is a little over 4...
