Description

This design is my favourite Coffin Cube design.  I have made so many of these puzzles starting early in 2000.  I was always tinkering with scale, wood type, shape, Color scheme, etc..

More recently I had some 1/2” cubes from BAZ so thought I’d make more and also revisited a two-piece stand design I came up with in 2008.

Here’s what Stewart wrote:

“Now more than sixty years after fashioning the Mikusiński Cube from wood scraps, dissections of

the  3x3x3 cube continue to fascinate me, but especially those that interlock. Better still, with all dissimilar non-symmetrical pieces. Is such a five-piece version possible? I doubt it, after having searched for years. I have designed several that come close, but most use a piece or two that is symmetrical, such as a single block key. A four-piece version that satisfies all of these requirements can also be entertaining. Here is one.”

Puzzle and stand is lacquered and hand buffed.

Woods used are:

Makore & Marblewood pieces with a Roasted Oak Stand.

Sphinks Cargo Car - Brian Young by Henry Strout
This cool packing puzzle was designed by Brian and is a continuation of Henry’s ‘Train themed’ puzzles.  It was Henry’s gift at the IPP34 Exchange at London, England. There are 6 pieces that need to be packed into the box car, that has one lone block permanently attached.Entire puzzle and pieces were triple buffed to a nice lustre. Please note:I modified the train box portion so it is now glued to the train car (with Olivewood edging) and features a removable lid (inset made from Padauk)...

Tube It In - William Strijbos by John Devost
It seems hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since I first made a small run of this clever packing puzzle design in 2006.  William has graciously allowed me to offer up another run as there were only a dozen copies made in 2006.The original metal version was William’s exchange puzzle at the IPP21 in Tokyo. This version is made using many wood varieties and includes a Stand.  The entire puzzle has been ‘triple buffed’ giving it a very nice sheen.Overall size is a little over 4...

This classic design was one of my earliest puzzle builds in the early 2000’s that I made for Bill Cutler. It features 18 pieces with four solutions, however finding one will definitely keep you busy for some time!I’ve always wanted to revisit it but in a smaller scale, I used a 3/16” unit size with the overall size being approximately 6” x 4”.The woods used (see last photo) were salvaged from an old upright piano that I layed out the keys in a wall hanging.  Slipfeathers in the tray a...

This classic design was one of my earliest puzzle builds in the early 2000’s that I made for Bill Cutler. It features 18 pieces with four solutions, however finding one will definitely keep you busy for some time!I’ve always wanted to revisit it but in a much smaller scale.  This size is small enough to fit in a pocket so definitely not as tiny as Allan Boardman’s version! As always everything is given my ‘Triple Buffing’ process making for smooth buttery finish.Crafted from Canarywood...
