Gary Foshee was a luminary of the
mechanical puzzle world for the past forty years. He was one of the
early innovators
of "sequential discovery" and "blind solve" modern puzzles. He was
commissioned to build the host gifts for Norman Sandfield and Bill
Cutler, the hosts of IPP23 held in Chicago in 2003. His very recent
untimely death saddened many in the puzzle world and all that new him,
including me. I will always carry a warm spot in my heart for the
"mock" law suit Gary brought against me stemming from the head butt I
gave him at IPP26 in Boston in 2006 (instigated by Gary repeatedly
calling me Zidane, the soccer player infamous for head butting another
player).
Gary's contribution to the Edward
Hordern Puzzle Exchange at IPP29 — held in San Francisco in 2009 — was
"Ring Box." The objective of this clever mechanical puzzle is to simply
remove the ring from the cylindrical box. "Ring Box" comes as
received at IPP29 in its original felt pouch with attached solution and
original box. It is 2 inches tall and 1 in in diameter. It's condition would be rated as "(A) Collector: Flaws must be very minor, subtle, and difficult to identify," and its function as "(1) Perfect: Neither loose nor tight, no binding or alignment issues, moves smoothly."
