The St. Nicholas Puzzle card was used to advertise the St. Nicholas Children's Magazine, published in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. It dates from 1892, and is described by Professor Hoffmann in his iconic and seminal work, Puzzles Old and New, as the Orchard Puzzle (see third photograph). The St. Nicholas puzzle card was used by the late great puzzle collector Edward Hordern as an example of The Orchard Puzzle in his generously illustrated update of Puzzles Old and New (as seen in the fourth photograph). The object of the puzzle is to cut the card into four identical pieces which each contain pictures of three St. Nicholas magazines.
My offering of the St. Nicholas Puzzle card is in near pristine condition --- amazing for a card stock item that is 130 years old! I will provide a copy of the solution to the St. Nicholas Puzzle card from Professor Hoffmann's book.
