Description

This gorgeous, ENORMOUS Karakuri comes from their 5th Idea Contest.  This Karakuri tightly couples its theme and solution, and has fantastic shelf presence.  It depicts a thermos container decanting liquid into a cup.  How can you stop the flow?  Answer the question and you’ll open the box.   To the best of my knowledge this is the first time it has ever been available via auction.  All original packaging included.

Karakuri product description:

Fill the teacup with hot water from the thermos. But be careful to not let it overflow. How can you turn it off? Be careful not to scald yourself.

This work was produced by Karakuri Creation Group’s craftsmen, from a selected idea of “5th Karakuri Puzzle Idea Contest”.

Original idea by Syunsuke Ohno

Hand-crafted by Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri Creation Group)

Size: 120×169×164mm

Gentleman Crocodile (2022) - Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri)
Yoh Kakuda is especially well-known for puzzle boxes that feature whimsical animal creations.  Gentleman Crocodile is one of Kakuda’s best, perfectly coupling theme and puzzle.  Thematically the puzzle presents us with its incongruous and humorous namesake: a crocodile wearing a hat.  Further, its solution is not only connected to its theme, but gives the solver an unexpected wonderful visual surprise along the way.  All original packing material is included. Karakuri product description:...

SOGO Box (2019) - Shou Sugimoto (Karakuri)
Shou Sugimoto’s SOGO Box is a wondrous creation.  Its shape is a cube as are many Karakuris, only Sugimoto has come up with an incredible mechanic that is challenging to find, delightful once discovered, and leaves you with the wonder of what could be going on inside that makes it possible.  It has a wonderful multi-colored zig-zag pattern on each face and is larger than many cubic Karakuris, giving it nice heft, beautiful feel, and impressive presence on display.  This copy is from the ori...

A long wait (2012) - Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri)
Yoh Kakuda’s A long wait poignantly presents us with a sitting figure with flat expression who – if the name is to be believed – has been waiting for quite some time.  It’s a double delight.  First is its distinctive, emotionally evocative figural depiction that is unique among all Karakuris.  Second is its incredible craftsmanship – the key step is nearly invisible, but utterly wonderful once discovered and amazing in how smoothly it moves.  All original packing material is includ...

Sad Tempura - Karakuri Idea Contest 2016
The best Karakuri Idea Contest winners combine theme and puzzle.  Sad Tempura does so in a particularly satisfying and humorous way, showing an enlarged serving of a single piece of shrimp tempura.  This very rare puzzle has three parts: the shrimp tempura, the small bowl that you would dip it in, and the platform on which they both sit.  But there’s a problem: the tempura doesn’t fit in the dipping bowl.  The puzzle box solution is thematically connected to this conundrum.  The work is...
