Description

Wausau ’83

"Designed by Bill Cutler in 1983 this 14 piece rectilinear burr is still seen as a brilliant design today.  Bill described this third puzzle in the series of four as the “best of the Wausau series”.

The burr showcases three contrasting Australian hardwoods:  Queensland Silver Ash, Queensland Blackbean and Saffron Heart. Saffron Heart is a rare tree restricted to sub-tropical rainforest areas in Queensland. It is a very dense wood with a striking, golden/yellow colour."

Bill Cutler: "I had always been interested in designing burr puzzles which are difficult to take apart. The burr shapes I had used to this point all had the same symmetry as the 6-piece burr or the 24-piece burr - mathematically there are 24 symmetries to these shapes. However, keeping all these symmetries and creating a new shape resulted in burrs with lots of Starting with the Wausau'81 burr, I experimented with shapes which had different 'patterns' of rods along the 3 axes. The last of the Wausau series. This puzzle requires several moves to get out the first piece."

WARNING!  Last image shows piece shapes, locations, and orientations, so do not look if seeing the for a mere split second could ruin this 38 year old design that Mr. Puzzle Australia last produced 7 years ago.  Sorry.
