Description

Urashima is a delightful, hard-to-find 2013 Karakuri creation by famed craftsman Tatsuo Miyamoto.  As with the best Karakuris, its theme and solution are beautifully coupled.  The puzzle box is inspired by the ancient Japanese tale of Urashima Tarō, a fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded with what feels like only a few days with the princess Otohime in the underwater Dragon Palace.  When he returns home he discovers that centuries have passed, and upon opening a mysterious box given to him by the Princess he ages and dies.  Hopefully you will similarly open this mysterious box, but with a less ominous outcome than the puzzle’s namesake.  All original packaging included.

Anteater (2009) - Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri)
Yoh Kakuda’s description on Karakuri’s Japanese language website reads “‘物語性のある動物ものが得意’“, which ChatGPT translates to “I'm good at animal-themed stories with a narrative”.  Anteater is one of Kakuda’s early works that showcases this style.  It presents its namesake in a whimsical fashion with a delightful solution that’s tightly coupled to its subject.  It’s wonderful.  All original packing material is included. Karakuri product description: ...

Compasses - Karakuri Idea Contest 2017
As with the best of Karakuris, this 2017 Karakuri Idea Contest winner beautifully integrates its theme with its solution.  It has two parts: a box containing a concealed compartment and a mechanical compass.  The box has a partial arc of a circle on top.  It’s both a puzzle to solve and a puzzle to consider the mechanic behind it.  All original packaging included. Ordinarily I'd include Karakuri's product description of the puzzle, but it is rather spoilery.  Please click through on the...

Lazy Wolf (2020) - Osamu Kasho (Karakuri)
Lazy Wolf is a fantastic example of celebrated puzzle craftsman Osamu Kasho’s singular combination of playful, character-driven Karakuri design coupled with delightful puzzling mechanic.  It presents you with a charming, slightly rotund wolf.  Can you open him up and discover what he just ate?  While the solution is only a few steps, it hinges on a key movement that is deceptively simple yet difficult to find.  This is a wonderful puzzle that is fun to solve and looks great on display. ...

A long wait (2012) - Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri)
Yoh Kakuda’s A long wait poignantly presents us with a sitting figure with flat expression who – if the name is to be believed – has been waiting for quite some time.  It’s a double delight.  First is its distinctive, emotionally evocative figural depiction that is unique among all Karakuris.  Second is its incredible craftsmanship – the key step is nearly invisible, but utterly wonderful once discovered and amazing in how smoothly it moves.  All original packing material is includ...
