Description

Way back in 2003 Karakuri introduced a set of boxes called the “Creative Secret Box Series”.  Now extremely hard to find, there were a total of nine Creative Secret puzzles.  Each was designed by a different craftsman, produced by senior Karakuri member Tatsuo Miyamoto, and featured a similar-styled almost fireworks-like pattern on some of the faces.  Type L is the second release in this series, designed by Karakuri founder Akio Kamei.  It came in three different patterns, with inlaid patterns on two opposing faces.  This is the third of the patterns, CS-2-3.  The puzzle has a delightful solution that involves two nice aha moments.   All original packing material is included.

I would normally include the Karakuri product description, but it is a bit spoilery.  If that’s ok you can find it by following this link: https://karakuri.gr.jp/en/products/cs-2-123/.

Honeybee (2009) - Haroyuki Oka (Karakuri)
This adorable early Karakuri box depicts a scene from nature – a bee flying about a flower.  A combination of at least six exotic woods are used to create a flower under which the box sits and a bee with wings and antenna that magnetically sticks to the flower and can be moved about it.  As with the best Kararukis the solution is connected to the theme of the puzzle in a delightful way.  This very rare puzzle box is by early craftsman Haroyuke Oka, who was responsible for a number of very c...

A long wait (2012) - Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri)
Yoh Kakuda’s A long wait poignantly presents us with a sitting figure with flat expression who – if the name is to be believed – has been waiting for quite some time.  It’s a double delight.  First is its distinctive, emotionally evocative figural depiction that is unique among all Karakuris.  Second is its incredible craftsmanship – the key step is nearly invisible, but utterly wonderful once discovered and amazing in how smoothly it moves.  All original packing material is includ...

Compasses - Karakuri Idea Contest 2017
As with the best of Karakuris, this 2017 Karakuri Idea Contest winner beautifully integrates its theme with its solution.  It has two parts: a box containing a concealed compartment and a mechanical compass.  The box has a partial arc of a circle on top.  It’s both a puzzle to solve and a puzzle to consider the mechanic behind it.  All original packaging included. Ordinarily I'd include Karakuri's product description of the puzzle, but it is rather spoilery.  Please click through on the...

Vaulting Horse - Karakuri Idea Contest 2010
Vaulting Horse is from the second ever Karakuri Idea Contest, in 2010.  It depicts a miniature vaulting horse of the sort you might see in a gymnastics competition.  It has two parts: the vaulting horse platform (including a cloth inlay on top) and its springboard (with a functional spring action).  It was crafted by Hideaki Kawashima, reflecting one of his early works as a member of the Karakuri Creation Group.  To the best of my knowledge, Vaulting Horse has never been on the auction marke...
