Description

Windmill Key (IPP34) by Tyler Somer / Waterloo Engraving

Pack 20 rectangles in the acrylic box and lock with the windmill key.

Tyler writes "This puzzle has its origins in a problem posed in an old mathematics textbook. The problem was to dissect a large rectangle into five smaller rectangles... to have the smallest dimension of the smallest rectangle to be 2 units. ...four very closely related solutions revealed themselves. By stacking these four related square solutions, the Windmill Key Puzzle was created.

The puzzle comes with 19 of the 20 rectangular pieces incorrectly placed in the box, along with a small key piece that looks like the blades of a windmill. The goal is to pack the 20 rectangles and close the lid. The lid of the box is composed of four hinged panels. Once the puzzle is solved, close the panels and “lock” them with the windmill key piece. Each layer of the packed box is unique."

Designed and exchanged by Tyler Somer at IPP 34 held in London, England in 2014.
