Description

Provenance: The Personal Collection of Bill Darrah

We are honored to present a rare opportunity to own a piece of puzzle history: The "Happy" Hooker Cube, originally exchanged at the 25th International Puzzle Party (IPP 25) in Helsinki, Finland (2005). This specific copy was part of the personal, private collection of legendary designer Bill Darrah, recovered and cataloged after his passing.

The Design & Craftsmanship

  • Designer: Bill Darrah. Known for his "deceptively simple" aesthetic, Darrah’s designs often hide complex internal geometries within classic shapes.
  • Master Maker: This piece was handcrafted by the master himself, Josef Pelikan. Pelikan's work is the "gold standard" of the puzzle world, famous for vacuum-tight tolerances and flawless finish.

  • Materials: Built of "fine hardwoods," the puzzle utilizes contrasting species (likely Walnut and Maple) to create a striking 3x3 checkered cube.

The Legacy Connection

This isn't just an IPP exchange puzzle; it is a heritage piece. Bill Darrah was a titan of the IPP community. For a collector, owning a puzzle that sat on Darrah's own shelves—especially one he designed and chose to keep—carries immense sentimental and historical value. This puzzle was part of the legacy collection maintained by Darrah and is offered here with that unique provenance.

Condition & Gameplay

  • Condition: Excellent, "collector’s grade." Meticulously maintained as part of a world-class collection.
  • Challenge: An interlocking cube that lives up to its name. The "Hooker" moniker hints at the clever, internal locking mechanisms that require a specific sequence to "unhook" and disassemble.
