Description

This is an incredible opportunity for any serious collector. Since I recently acquired the personal collection of the late Bill Darrah, I have been cataloging several duplicates of his most iconic designs.

I sold one of these "Happy" Hooker Cubes just recently, and the interest was overwhelming. If you missed out on that first listing, here is your second (and likely final) chance to own a piece of puzzle history with impeccable provenance.

Up for auction is a rare and highly sought-after exchange puzzle from the 25th International Puzzle Party (IPP 25) held in Helsinki, Finland, in 2005. This isn't just any copy; it comes directly from the private collection of the designer himself, Bill Darrah.

The Design & Challenge

Designed by Bill Darrah and precision-crafted by the legendary Josef Pelikan, this interlocking cube is a testament to the "deceptively simple" style Darrah was famous for.

  • The Hook: The name refers to the internal "hooked" geometry of the pieces. Unlike standard burr puzzles that rely on simple sliding movements, this cube requires a specific, clever sequence of moves to navigate the internal tabs.
  • The Woods: Beautifully constructed from contrasting premium hardwoods, showing the tight tolerances and buttery-smooth finish that defines Pelikan’s work.
  • The Experience: It is widely considered one of Darrah's most satisfying solves—tricky enough to challenge a veteran, but logical enough to provide a true "Aha!" moment when the pieces finally release.

Rare Bosstonean Cube - IPP26 Boston (2006) - Coordinate Motion Puzzle by Joe Becker & Bill Darrah
Up for auction is the highly sought-after Bosstonean Cube, an official exchange puzzle from the 26th International Puzzle Party (IPP26) held in Boston in 2006.Designed by Bill Darrah and Joe Becker, this puzzle is a brilliant homage to Serhiy Grabarchuk’s "Cubical Borromean Rings."
