Description

⟬ Smallbox Fortnight ⟭——16. Eric Krusenstjerna - Magic Billet Box (type II) (2017)

made from anodised CNC machined aluminum and neodymium magnets.

Eric Krusenstjerna (often shortened to Krusen) has been making these CNC-milled magnetic boxes since about 2006 or 2007. he sold them through his own site for a while (no longer up) and through eBay, and fairly recently moved to Etsy (as magicbilletbox). he may still do custom designs if you have one in mind.

this is an interesting box, but not necessarily a puzzle, so the following description isn't a spoiler. in fact, Eric posted the first instructional video to YouTube in 2007, and he's always been very clear about how they function.

the boxes have outer and inner lids, both magnetically held. there are two methods to open them, depending (i believe) on the configuration of the magnets in the inner lid:

type I is opened by simply inverting the outer lid over the inner lid;

type II is solved the same way, but the inner lid requires additional kinetic energy to release it, and this means giving the inverted outer lid a sharp tap while holding the box. it's a neat physics trick.

here's one of his YouTube videos showing a type II box.

Karakuri Hit Box (2008)
⟬ Smallbox Fortnight ⟭——21. Karakuri Hit Box (2008) from the KCG description: You must hit the box to open it. This is quite simple, but it is also quite funny. At craft fairs, many people felt that Karakuri Boxes were difficult to open. Therefore, this was designed. For a long time, the craftsman continued making it in secret, because, other craftsmen in our group were trying to create special works, too. This is a new specification. The surface painting...

⟬ Smallbox Fortnight ⟭——30. traditional Japanese box: 4-step 1 sun (maker & date unknown) general notes on the traditional boxes: this, like the other traditional Japanese boxes in this fortnight, may have come from Mary & Mike at PuzzleBoxWorld, but beyond that possibility i have no information on it. the last photo shows the box open, which i'm assuming is not too much of a spoiler for anyone here. i do this mainly for those who might be interest...

⟬ Smallbox Fortnight ⟭——22. Karakuri Small Box collection +2 (2004-2010)Acorn Box and Fake Box aren't technically part of this series, but i'm including them in this listing because they get along so well with the rest of the guys, i don't have the heart to break up a team. they've been through so much together. especially since the tragic loss of Small Box #9 on that North Pacific mission i'm not allowed to discuss. Eric Fuller - Small Button Box (2016)
⟬ Smallbox Fortnight ⟭——14. Eric Fuller - Small Button Box (2016) from Eric's description: This design was inspired by the interior of the previous box I made, the Reactor Box. The final interior box was held in place by a couple strong magnets, and felt like a button when pushed. It made me think about the things I could do with an apparently simple box that just had a button to push. I like to take advantage of people's assumptions, and everyone has them when it co...
