Description

Each year, the International Puzzle Party (IPP) is held somewhere around the world. One of its revered traditions is the day-long Edward Hordern Puzzle Exchange, in which participants bring copies of a previously unproduced puzzle to exchange with all the other participants.  To participate, a puzzle must first be submitted for design review and evaluated for quality and originality. If approved, the exchanger must produce enough copies for all the other exchangers. On the day of the exchange, only the exchanger and a single assistant are permitted in the exchange room. It takes the entire day for every pair of exchangers to meet, chat, and trade puzzles. Some of these puzzles are subsequently produced commercially, while others exist only in the small number of copies made for the exchange and are never produced again.

Seven years ago, the 39th IPP was held in Kanazawa, Japan. This auction includes 57 exchange puzzles from that event. Highlights include Frederick Boucher's Artefacts; Yavuz Demirhan's Tetropento and Nepomuk; Oskar van Deventer's Rainbow Ring; Takeyuki Endo's Haikeis; Marcel Gillen's I Love Puzzles; Pit Khiam Goh's Direction; and Brian Turner's famed puzzle lock Lock'd In. Further information about all the included puzzles follows.  Each IPP also features small puzzles produced by the hosts and distributed to all participants. Four of those puzzles are included in this lot.

(Please note that the boxes for a handful of the puzzles show some wear but the puzzles are otherwise all in fine condition, as visible in the photographs.)

Flemin' - Shiro Tajima (Karakuri)
Shiro Tajima is an early Karakuri craftsman who created only a limited number of highly creative puzzle boxes.  Flemin' appears as an innocuous cube but opening it is surprisingly challenging.  You'll find the first move pretty easily, but you'll go round and round trying to find the key next step.  And once you do open it you'll  also enjoy seeing the delightfully simple mechanic behind it all.  The puzzle is a bit tight but still quite solvable.(Note that Tajima apparently did not depart ...
