Description

I only ever made two of these puzzles for the IPP Design Competition (San Francisco) in 2009.  It’s a fun puzzle that can be very confusing to assemble from pieces even if you see the assembled shape.

Several years ago Scott Peterson (at my insistence) made a very nice run of them and later Tom Lensch (at John Rausch’s insistence) made a run, with some featuring Holly, Ebony and Rosewood!

I recently was able to acquire some 1/2” size stock and decided to make a few.  This can be considered my first puzzle project in over seven years and over 12 years since I first made any ‘Barb’s Cube’ puzzles!

I suppose you could call these mini or pocket size, although they are not micro like Allan Boardman puzzles.  I used a variety of woods in many different patterns, my favourite are the ‘Checkered Cube’ version but the design looks really nice in any combination.

I lacquered and hand buffed them with a coat of ‘Conservators Wax’ to make them pop.  This Puzzle was named after my loving wife Barb.

Woods used in this copy are:

 Zebrawood/Walnut/Cedar/Purpleheart/Cherry

Puzzle ships disassembled with information sheet.

This classic design was one of my earliest puzzle builds in the early 2000’s that I made for Bill Cutler. It features 18 pieces with four solutions, however finding one will definitely keep you busy for some time!I’ve always wanted to revisit it but in a much smaller scale.  This size is small enough to fit in a pocket so definitely not as tiny as Allan Boardman’s version! As always everything is given my ‘Triple Buffing’ process making for smooth buttery finish.Crafted from Canarywood...

Pentablock - Stewart Coffin Design #2 by John Devost
I’ve been wanting to make this design for years and now after decades making puzzles finally made a copy using some of my Salvaged Piano Wood. One of the first puzzles that I purchased from Interlocking Puzzles (Wayne Daniel - RIP) in early 2000 was this familiar 12 Piece Pentomino design.  I made a box to contain the 3x4x5 (3940 solutions) and the 2x5x6 (264 solutions) configuration.Everything has my ‘Triple Buff Finish’ and comes with printed solutions sheet.Shipping cost to be determin...

Gouge Packing Puzzle - Gaétan Gouge by John Devost
I previously made a few of this surprisingly difficult packing puzzle by Gaétan and at the time I didn’t have any contact info for him but then a few years ago I was surprised by one of his puzzle purchases in ‘Paradise’.My plan was to make another run but life kinda’ took a turn so now I’ve managed to sort myself out and began making another run.Allard kindly blogged about the copies I made in 2014, here’s an excerpt:https://allardspuzzlingtimes.blogspot.com/2014/04/gouge-packing-p...
