Checking In (STC 223)

designed by Stewart Coffin
crafted by John Devost

  • production year: 2008
  • condition: as new, with beautifully aged woods
  • materials: Walnut, Maple, Lacewood
  • description: an eight-piece tray puzzle by Stewart Coffin built from isosceles right triangles that cleverly exploits a common instinct: if you pack the pieces tight into the corners you’ll inevitably strand two, the correct packings leave small corner gaps instead. Coffin later issued a two-tone, checkered version that eliminates all but a single solution. This rare 2008 copy by John Devost uses walnut pieces in a lacewood tray with maple splines and a walnut floating bottom, and it’s signed and dated.
