Description

As with the best of Karakuris, this 2017 Karakuri Idea Contest winner beautifully integrates its theme with its solution.  The top of the box presents a field of clovers.  What do you need to do in this field of clover to get the box to open?  It's trickier than your first guess might suggest.  And, if you do solve it, what possible mechanism could possibly make it work?  All original packaging included.

Ordinarily I'd include Karakuri's product description of the puzzle, but it is a bit spoilery.  Please click through on the following link if you are ok with this: Four-leaf clover puzzle description.  The puzzle is based on an idea by Miharu Suzuki and was hand-crafted by Akio Kamei and Kyoko Hoshino.

Size: 150×100×68 mm

Material: keyaki (zelkova), purple heart, magnolia

Condition: There is some minor discoloration of the wood in locations not visible in the unsolved state and only evident as you solve it - exposed wood portions darkened a bit over time, while some limited, otherwise unexposed portions retained a slightly lighter color. This discoloration is not shown as it would reveal part of the solution but can be provided upon request.

Pyrigan 808 - John Partridge
Precision-engineered metal puzzles have become a cornerstone of many serious collections. One of its early pioneers is John Partridge of Pyrigan & Company Puzzles, whose exacting design and production standards have yielded just three now-classic creations: #357, #360, and his first - and now very hard-to-find - #808.  The #808 is machined from T6061 aluminum with a tolerance of +/- 0.002 inches.  It features two apparent dovetail joints, concealing an internal mechanism that must be discovere...

Penultimate Burr Box Set - Eric Fuller / Ken Irvine / Van Delft & Botermans (Cubic Dissection)
The Penultimate Burr Box Set is a foundational item that belongs in any serious puzzle collection.  It succeeds on multiple important levels. First, it introduced a new system of burr puzzles using 6-unit length pieces - a departure from the traditional 8-unit format that defined decades of classic burr designs. This shift surprisingly allows for a greater diversity of puzzle challenges. Second, the elegant wooden box contains 27 meticulously crafted burr pieces made from exotic hardwoods tha...

Loopy L Cube #1 - Junichi Yananose (Juno)
Loopy L Cube #1 is Juno’s first assembly-style puzzle — a fresh venue in which he could showcase his signature ingenuity. Juno designed nine V-shaped pieces, each with a clever combination of tabs and holes, which must interlock to form a seemingly simple 3x3x3 cube. But true to Juno’s trademark style, the solution is surprisingly complex, with many near-miss configurations that tempt but ultimately fail. This now very hard-to-find puzzle, crafted from New Guinea Walnut and Silver Ash, ...

Dharuma Doll - Karakuri Idea Contest 2011
An absolutely adorable 2011 work of puzzling art, this early Karakuri Idea Contest beauty looks fantastic on a shelf.  The eyes move.  The nose moves.  The eyebrows move.  Even the three buttons at the bottom move.  But can you figure out how the box opens? All original packaging included.Karakuri product description: You can make his eyes to goggle and revolve his nose. Also you can make his eyebrows to rise and lower. He is very expressive!
