Description

As with the best of Karakuris, this 2017 Karakuri Idea Contest winner beautifully integrates its theme with its solution.  The top of the box presents a field of clovers.  What do you need to do in this field of clover to get the box to open?  It's trickier than your first guess might suggest.  And, if you do solve it, what possible mechanism could possibly make it work?  All original packaging included.

Ordinarily I'd include Karakuri's product description of the puzzle, but it is a bit spoilery.  Please click through on the following link if you are ok with this: Four-leaf clover puzzle description.  The puzzle is based on an idea by Miharu Suzuki and was hand-crafted by Akio Kamei and Kyoko Hoshino.

Size: 150×100×68 mm

Material: keyaki (zelkova), purple heart, magnolia

Condition: There is some minor discoloration of the wood in locations not visible in the unsolved state and only evident as you solve it - exposed wood portions darkened a bit over time, while some limited, otherwise unexposed portions retained a slightly lighter color. This discoloration is not shown as it would reveal part of the solution but can be provided upon request.

Parabox (2005) - Akio Kamei (Karakuri)
Kamei is known for highly original puzzle mechanics, and this is a great example of that.  I have no idea what's going on inside that makes the crazy cool solution possible.Karakuri product description:The name Parabox was made by paradox and box. When you open the box, it will be locked up. The material is Silky-oak which is beautiful and rare.Size: 20 x 100 x 80 mmMaterial: silky-oakCondition: Slight discoloration on wood. Silver Lock + Goldilock - Shane Hales
Shane Hales is a locksmith by trade, as well as one of the world’s foremost puzzle lock designers and crafters.  Shane has only released a handful of puzzle locks and because they are so coveted by collectors they are very hard to find.  This auction assembles two that were exchange puzzles at the 38th IPP (International Puzzle Party) in San Diego, California, in 2018: Silver Lock (exchanged by Daniel Bain) and Goldilock (exchanged by Peter Hajek).  As you would expect from a Shane Hales pu...

Spring Camera (2018) - Hideaki Kawashima (Karakuri)
Spring Camera is considered by many to be Kawashima's masterpiece, and one of the top Karakuris of all time.  It is meticulously modeled after an antique camera, and as with the best Karakuris, the solution mirrors the object's function.  But only so far.  You must remember that you haven't finished solving a Kawashima puzzle until you see his signature "hanko" stamp.  This puzzle is magnificent in its craftsmanship in addition to providing a fantastic puzzle experience - which is why it is ...

Moon (2020) - Hideaki Kawashima (Karakuri)
Beautiful Karakuri with clever solution by Kawashima.  Hmm, why is one face a different color than the others...?Karakuri product description:This work was designed as a Christmas present for 2020.The theme is the phases of the moon. It's relatively easy for me to create a complicated Karakuri box by increasing the number of moves, but it's not so easy to create a convincing box with fewer moves.Compared to my Christmas presents of the past, the theme and the trick are clearer, although it may b...
