Description

I previously made a few of this surprisingly difficult packing puzzle by Gaétan and at the time I didn’t have any contact info for him but then a few years ago I was surprised by one of his puzzle purchases in ‘Paradise’.

My plan was to make another run but life kinda’ took a turn so now I’ve managed to sort myself out and began making another run.

Allard kindly blogged about the copies I made in 2014, here’s an excerpt:

https://allardspuzzlingtimes.blogspot.com/2014/04/gouge-packing-puzzle.html?m=1

“Inspired by the famous Hoffmann Packing Puzzle, Gaétan wrote about this puzzle in Cubism For Fun [Issue 33] back in 1994, explaining that he’d sought to use voids in the puzzle as an intrinsic part of the puzzle itself. The challenge is to pack a total of 26 cubes into the box so that nothing projects above the lip of the box. There are 21 cubes of unit size 5 and the rest are 8 units cubed. All of these cubes need to be packed into the box which is 18 units cubed internally.”

The woods used were salvaged from an old upright piano (see last photo of my keyboard wall hanging from that Piano that was produced in the ‘roaring ‘20’s!)

Slipfeathers in the tray are Purpleheart.

As always everything is given my ‘Triple Buffing’ process making for smooth buttery finish.

Shipping cost to be determined at close of auction.

This classic design was one of my earliest puzzle builds in the early 2000’s that I made for Bill Cutler. It features 18 pieces with four solutions, however finding one will definitely keep you busy for some time!I’ve always wanted to revisit it but in a much smaller scale.  This size is small enough to fit in a pocket so definitely not as tiny as Allan Boardman’s version! As always everything is given my ‘Triple Buffing’ process making for smooth buttery finish.Crafted from Canarywood...

Singmaster Packing - David Singmaster (1971) by John Devost
This design by Professor Singmaster (sadly passed away in 2023) was my very first puzzle offering at CubicDissection back in 2005, it’s 25 pieces that can be packed in the box 22 ways.I was going through my ‘Salvaged Piano Wood’ (see last photo of my keyboard wall hanging, that I made from our upright piano that was produced in the ‘roaring ‘20’s!), so I figured I’d make more of this classic puzzle with this antique lumber. As always everything gets my ‘triple buffing finish’ th...

Tube It In - William Strijbos by John Devost
It seems hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since I first made a small run of this clever packing puzzle design in 2006.  William has graciously allowed me to offer up another run as there were only a dozen copies made in 2006.The original metal version was William’s exchange puzzle at the IPP21 in Tokyo. This version is made using many wood varieties and includes a Stand.  The entire puzzle has been ‘triple buffed’ giving it a very nice sheen.Overall size is a little over 4...
