Description
The use of straw instead of wood veneer is usually said to have begun in France and Holland, but the practice was introduced to England as early as the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century English makers were decorating various kinds of boxes in this way; most notably working on tea caddies.
This is a very simple capture of a once thriving art form. I don’t know where this box originated from or who built it, but it’s naturally reflective effect does quite the fine job of standing out.
This is a one of a kind 6 moves to open puzzle, #42/100 vintage box retrofits.
