Description

This puzzle is one that I only ever made two copies of back in early 2000.  At the request of a puzzle collector they were made to resemble Stewart’s original.

I was able to acquire some 1/2” cubes from BAZ so decided to make a small run.

Here’s what Stewart wrote:

“It consisted of 10 checkered pieces made of five cubic blocks joined different ways, that packed checkered into a 5x5x2 box one way only.  Credit for the computer analysis that led to this surprising unique design goes to Mike Beeler.  Without the checkering there are 2408 solutions.  The name by the way came from a sarcastic comment I once received at a craft show”

Puzzle was lacquered and buffed to a nice sheen.

Woods used are: Chechen & Maple pieces and Tray is Mahogany with Wenge Slipfeathers.

Tube It In 2 - William Hu by John Devost
I’m sure everyone is quite familiar with William Strijbos’ original Tube It In design so I don’t think I need to give a lengthy description but should say that William Hu came up with a novel design twist on this awesome puzzle and he has graciously allowed me to make a small run.I’ve long since left the puzzle scene after completely retiring, however I did finish up a select few of these and thought I’d offer them up for sale. This puzzle is crafted from Canarywood with Purpleheart Sli...

This classic design was one of my earliest puzzle builds in the early 2000’s that I made for Bill Cutler. It features 18 pieces with four solutions, however finding one will definitely keep you busy for some time!I’ve always wanted to revisit it but in a smaller scale, I used a 3/16” unit size with the overall size being approximately 6” x 4”.The woods used were salvaged from an old upright piano from the 1920’s that I layed out the keys in a wall hanging (see last photo). Slipfeath...

Gouge Packing Puzzle - Gaétan Gouge by John Devost
I previously made a few of this surprisingly difficult packing puzzle by Gaétan and at the time I didn’t have any contact info for him but then a few years ago I was surprised by one of his puzzle purchases in ‘Paradise’.My plan was to make another run but life kinda’ took a turn so now I’ve managed to sort myself out and began making another run.Allard kindly blogged about the copies I made in 2014, here’s an excerpt:https://allardspuzzlingtimes.blogspot.com/2014/04/gouge-packing-p...

Singmaster Packing - David Singmaster (1971) by John Devost
This design by Professor Singmaster (sadly passed away in 2023) was my very first puzzle offering at CubicDissection back in 2005, it’s 25 pieces that can be packed in the box 22 ways.I was going through my ‘Salvaged Piano Wood’ (see last photo of my keyboard wall hanging, that I made from our upright piano that was produced in the ‘roaring ‘20’s!), so I figured I’d make more of this classic puzzle with this antique lumber. As always everything gets my ‘triple buffing finish’ th...
