About Autumn Rush:

I certainly am grateful for that cool fall day long ago as a 16 year old when my Dad first showed me a bit of woodworking in our basement. He didn’t hardly have much but a milk crate of tools and yet there was this pile of raw lumber that was somehow magically transfixed into a beautiful corner cabinet for his mom. I wish I had pictures of the experience like kids can record now with their phones and what not.

Last year, in remembrance of my Dad I built Autumn Rush, a 5 moves to open mechanical puzzle box. He always loved what I did with wood and he would just grin and shake his head, smile and hand the puzzle back to me unsolved. I know that our woodworking story had been a source of great pride for him. I would have liked to have more project time together with him, sharing the sawdust and the memories. I will miss that now that he is gone. I was sure that I was going to have time to show him how to build a puzzle too, damn.

While I can expertly inset a pair of mini hinges into a lid and box, I chose to challenge this design by making the lid free floating, and it just feels puzzlier, if thats a thing. So, not only do I need to lock the lid, it needed to be held securely in place in the meantime.

All I can say is that I am super lucky to be able to remain a kid forever by designing and building these crazy contraptions for the confused and maladjusted, aka, my friends, my family.

As for solving it, it fits into a categorey described as sequential discovery. Which means that itit’sike you are lead down a garden path with a blindfold on and likely a candidate for the ‘Penny solution”.

Thanks Pops.
