Description

I’ve had this puzzle design on my to do list for quite some time, I originally wanted to make a copy of ‘Split Box’ however making a box that could convert into two different trays was futile.  I ultimately decided to make a Box that features a Sliding drawer that I think suits this design nicely!  I used half-lap joinery for this box, (instead of my usual miter and slipfeather technique.)

Here’s Stewart’s description for both designs:

“The five solid polyomino puzzle pieces

assemble into a 4x6 rectangle one way only, into a 3x8 rectangle two ways, and into its 2x3x4 box four ways. The two

halves of the tricky box are held together with a rubber band, as it converts from a 2x3x4 box to a 4x6 tray. Inverted it forms a 3x8 tray. (In retrospect, a crazy idea - too complicated. See next.)

Same pieces as #188 above but five colorful woods in a simple 2x3x4 box with sliding cover. As usual, simpler really is better. There are four solutions. (Amelia is my granddaughter.)”

Pieces are Yellowheart/Padauk/Black Palm/Bocote/Zebrawood - Box & Drawer is Black Limba.

This classic design was one of my earliest puzzle builds in the early 2000’s that I made for Bill Cutler. It features 18 pieces with four solutions, however finding one will definitely keep you busy for some time!I’ve always wanted to revisit it but in a smaller scale, I used a 3/16” unit size with the overall size being approximately 6” x 4”.The woods used were salvaged from an old upright piano from the 1920’s that I layed out the keys in a wall hanging (see last photo). Slipfeath...

Gouge Packing Puzzle - Gaétan Gouge by John Devost
I previously made a few of this surprisingly difficult packing puzzle by Gaétan and at the time I didn’t have any contact info for him but then a few years ago I was surprised by one of his puzzle purchases in ‘Paradise’.My plan was to make another run but life kinda’ took a turn so now I’ve managed to sort myself out and began making another run.Allard kindly blogged about the copies I made in 2014, here’s an excerpt:https://allardspuzzlingtimes.blogspot.com/2014/04/gouge-packing-p...

Tube It In 2 - William Hu by John Devost
I’m sure everyone is quite familiar with William Strijbos’ original Tube It In design so I don’t think I need to give a lengthy description but should say that William Hu came up with a novel design twist on this awesome puzzle and he has graciously allowed me to make a small run.I’ve long since left the puzzle scene after completely retiring, however I did finish up a select few of these and thought I’d offer them up for sale. This puzzle is crafted from Padauk with Yellowheart Slipfea...

Tube It In - William Strijbos by John Devost
It seems hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since I first made a small run of this clever packing puzzle design in 2006.  William has graciously allowed me to offer up another run as there were only a dozen copies made in 2006.The original metal version was William’s exchange puzzle at the IPP21 in Tokyo. This version is made using many wood varieties and includes a Stand.  The entire puzzle has been ‘triple buffed’ giving it a very nice sheen.Overall size is a little over 4...
