Description

As I continue to prune my personal puzzle collection, I’m offering up this very cool puzzle that was expertly crafted by Cubicdissection.  While not an overly difficult design, it does feature some trickery.

Here’s Eric’s description:

“I'm glad to be revisiting this fun design! Originally released with limited availability in 2015, the Chicken Puzzle boasts an impressive level 10 solution and a hidden surprise. The 2020 version was upgraded with an improved chicken byproduct retention system. Yellowheart and Cherry offset each other for that pleasing chicken look without all the annoying chicken poop everywhere. Or do they...?

Construction techniques used in this puzzle are unique. The Yellowheart cage is made of only six pieces; each corner wrap around was milled from solid wood. Burr internals sit flush with the outer pieces and use notched joinery, showing only uninterrupted side grain. A lot of time and effort was spent making this puzzle not only strong but aesthetically pleasing.

76 copies made for sale, each signed and dated. This puzzle is shipped assembled.

Puzzle Mad wrote a very good blog review of this interlocking puzzle”

In keeping with the theme of this puzzle I made a Box using Aromatic Cedar with Peruvian Walnut Slipfeathers.

Doubleplay - Stewart Coffin Design #X-75 (2015) by John Devost
This design was used by Saul Bobroff as his IPP 37 Exchange puzzle gift in Paris.Stewart designed this cool puzzle in 2015 and used three different lidded box variants, and I thought I’d craft my version using a dovetail lid similar to Saul’s version. Here’s Stewart’s description:“The name Doubleplay comes from the two tasks – finding the one solution to the 3x3x3 cubic assembly, and then figuring out how to get the darn thing into the box, both difficult.”I used more of my ‘Piano...

Gouge Packing Puzzle - Gaétan Gouge by John Devost
I previously made a few of this surprisingly difficult packing puzzle by Gaétan and at the time I didn’t have any contact info for him but then a few years ago I was surprised by one of his puzzle purchases in ‘Paradise’.My plan was to make another run but life kinda’ took a turn so now I’ve managed to sort myself out and began making another run.Allard kindly blogged about the copies I made in 2014, here’s an excerpt:https://allardspuzzlingtimes.blogspot.com/2014/04/gouge-packing-p...

Singmaster Packing - David Singmaster (1971) by John Devost
This design by Professor Singmaster (sadly passed away in 2023) was my very first puzzle offering at CubicDissection back in 2005, it’s 25 pieces that can be packed in the box 22 ways.I was going through my ‘Salvaged Piano Wood’ (see last photo of my keyboard wall hanging, that I made from our upright piano that was produced in the ‘roaring ‘20’s!), so I figured I’d make more of this classic puzzle with this antique lumber. As always everything gets my ‘triple buffing finish’ th...

Tube It In - William Strijbos by John Devost
It seems hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since I first made a small run of this clever packing puzzle design in 2006.  William has graciously allowed me to offer up another run as there were only a dozen copies made in 2006.The original metal version was William’s exchange puzzle at the IPP21 in Tokyo. This version is made using many wood varieties and includes a Stand.  The entire puzzle has been ‘triple buffed’ giving it a very nice sheen.Overall size is a little over 4...
