Description

Dashi, like many of the best Karakuri Idea Contest winners, reflects an item from Japanese culture.  In this case Dashi is designed to look like a traditional hand plane style bonito shaver.  It has three parts: the main cutter box, a lid that covers it, and a piece of bonito fish.  The box has a drawer that doesn’t seem to come out, which is where the bonito flakes would accumulate for an actual bonito shaver.  As with the best Idea Contest winners, the theme and puzzle are connected, here integrating the bonito shaver motif as part of the puzzle.  The workmanship is beautiful, especially in how the blade portion is purely wooden yet astonishingly realistic looking.

Karakuri product description:

This work is in the image of a Japanese traditional device called, "Katsuobushi kezuriki". It is a dried bonito-fish shaver. Even the blade of the Japanese carpenter's plane is made from wood, yet it looks so realistic. How do you shave the Katsuobushi? The solution is slightly difficult. Katsuobushi (dried bonito) is a part of mechanism. This work was produced by Karakuri Creation Group’s craftsmen, from a selected idea of “10th Karakuri Puzzle Idea Contest”.

Dried bonito shaver (Katsuobushi kezuriki) This implement, which was originally converted from a carpenter's plane, had a small box in which the blade was positioned upward, and the small box had a drawer from where the shaved katsuobushi pieces were removed.

Original idea by Kinya Matsunaga

Hand-crafted by Osamu Kasho (Karakuri Creation Group)

Size: 177×72×76mm

Material: Cherry, Oak, Maple, Ancient ash, Walnut

Condition: The dashi fish must have sat on the lid while on display in the store in Hakone where it was bought for some time, since the the wood is slightly lighter in an area under which the dashi was sitting.  This is as it was purchased, and doesn’t impact the puzzle.

A long wait (2012) - Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri)
Yoh Kakuda’s A long wait poignantly presents us with a sitting figure with flat expression who – if the name is to be believed – has been waiting for quite some time.  It’s a double delight.  First is its distinctive, emotionally evocative figural depiction that is unique among all Karakuris.  Second is its incredible craftsmanship – the key step is nearly invisible, but utterly wonderful once discovered and amazing in how smoothly it moves.  All original packing material is includ...

Urashima (2013) - Tatsuo Miyamoto (Karakuri)
Urashima is a delightful, hard-to-find 2013 Karakuri creation by famed craftsman Tatsuo Miyamoto.  As with the best Karakuris, its theme and solution are beautifully coupled.  The puzzle box is inspired by the ancient Japanese tale of Urashima Tarō, a fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded with what feels like only a few days with the princess Otohime in the underwater Dragon Palace.  When he returns home he discovers that centuries have passed, and upon opening a mysterious box give...

Odawara Lantern (2008) - Tatsuo Miyamoto (Karakuri)
Odawara Lantern is a classic, hard-to-find 2008 Karakuri creation by famed craftsman Tatsuo Miyamoto.  The puzzle is inspired by the traditional Odawara chochin, a foldable traveling lantern historically used in the Odawara region where Karakuri is located.  This Odawara lantern has multiple compartments that open in a satisfying, beautiful way.  It is fairly large and has fantastic shelf presence.  All original packing material is included. Karakuri product description: This is one of the...

Anteater (2009) - Yoh Kakuda (Karakuri)
Yoh Kakuda’s description on Karakuri’s Japanese language website reads “‘物語性のある動物ものが得意’“, which ChatGPT translates to “I'm good at animal-themed stories with a narrative”.  Anteater is one of Kakuda’s early works that showcases this style.  It presents its namesake in a whimsical fashion with a delightful solution that’s tightly coupled to its subject.  It’s wonderful.  All original packing material is included. Karakuri product description: ...
