Description

Jack in the Box is a gorgeous and clever early Karakuri-style mechanical puzzle box by master puzzle craftsman Jesse Born.  Its challenge is to find the very well-disguised sequence of steps that will eventually open the box and reveal the deck of playing cards within (the deck of cards in this copy remains in its original sealed wrap).  The exterior is made from Wenge and Holly additionally decorated on top with a spade and two stripes crafted from Cherry and Walnut in Japanese yosegi style; the interior features Bocote.  One of only 100 produced, this puzzle showcases Jesse's hallmark combination of traditional woodworking, layered mechanical complexity, and highly satisfying solution experience. Comes with original Jesse Born cardboard box.

Size: 5.5 x 4.5 x 3.3 inches

Material: Wenge, Holly, Bocote, Cherry, and Walnut

Ring Case (2019) - Junichi Yananose (Juno)
This sequential discovery puzzle box by famed puzzle craftsman Junichi Yananose (Juno) is utterly brilliant and one of his best.  As you would expect with a sequential discovery puzzle you have to move through a series of steps, but here each step is hard to find because each is so darned clever.  It’s just wonderful.  Even after you get to the hidden compartment you’ll discover a ring that gives the puzzle its name – and that seemingly won’t come out.  Can you open the box?  Can yo...

Railroad Crossing - Karakuri Idea Contest 2019
As with the best of Karakuri Idea Contest winners, Railroad Crossing is beautiful to behold, reflects incredible craftsmanship, and embodies a highly creative solution connected with the puzzle’s theme.  For this one the mechanic is truly remarkable, reflecting an additional puzzle: How was this even possible to build?  Railroad Crossing is large and impressive on a shelf.  All original packing material is included. Karakuri product description: Some of the mechanisms move automatically. ...

Drawer of Stepping Monument (2018) - Hiroshi Iwahara (Karakuri)
Hiroshi Iwahara is known for unusual and intricate puzzle mechanisms, and this is one of his best.  Karakuri gives the English name of this puzzle box as “Drawer of Stepping Monument”, but its Japanese name is “飛び石の引出”, which Google translates to the more accurate “Stepping Stone Drawer”.   Somehow the beautifully crafted “stepping stones” along the top – which we are told represent a string of islands – are a clue to the solution.  Whatever is going on inside...

Stop the hot water! - Karakuri Idea Contest 2013
This gorgeous, ENORMOUS Karakuri comes from their 5th Idea Contest.  This Karakuri tightly couples its theme and solution, and has fantastic shelf presence.  It depicts a thermos container decanting liquid into a cup.  How can you stop the flow?  Answer the question and you’ll open the box.   To the best of my knowledge this is the first time it has ever been available via auction.  All original packaging included. Karakuri product description: Fill the teacup with hot water from t...
