Gregory took one look at the traditional 6-piece burr style and decided to design a 6-piece burr that would torment and screw with the minds of all prospective burr solvers. He cut out triangular notches, added triangular cuts, and introduced a wild coordinate-motion moves integral to taking this burr apart and back together.
For such a remarkable idea, it's oddly hard to find anyone who is willing to make copies of this series! Eric noted that it'd be a nightmare to make and turned it down. But Gregory was clever and handed him a copy to try and after that, Eric had to make this puzzle.
Crenal was my first ever NOS Burr that I was lucky enough to get my hands on. And it was just awful. I spent weeks and weeks on this puzzle and had to give up for a long time before I got better as a burr puzzler and cut my teeth on the earlier NOS burrs in the series before I finally solved this one. And I still looked up a video guide just to understand everything that went on inside of this burr! I've never tried the last two burrs in the NOS series, but I shudder in fear just knowing that there are two NOS burrs even worse than this one!
Note that the family picture of 4 NOS Burrs are just me showing a group photo of my collected NOS Burrs. Only one burr, the purpleheart Crenal, is being sold in this auction. The other 3 NOS Burrs are in separate auctions from this one.
Also note that Crenal has a strong waxy feel to it. When I first got this burr and finally took it apart, the burr sticks felt very dry to the touch. So I waxed it with some beeswax and put a coat of Renwax afterwards while being generous with the wax to best rejuvenate and preserve the burr sticks. The coating is still secure and holding strong even five years later since its application to today.
