It all began in 1978. Dean Hoffman designed his Packing Puzzle, a cube made up of 27 identical pieces. But it was different from the usual; it was imperfect, because its volume was smaller than that of the box it was contained in. Despite its six completely parallel faces, it contained empty spaces. This cube had 21 valid solutions.
The brilliant Haym Hirsh drew inspiration from this cube. He began by designing the Hoffman Jr. puzzle (Inelegant 5x5) and continued the series with Inelegant Soma, Inelegant Box, Inelegant Cube, Inelegant Snake, and Inelegant Fake. Haym Hirsh combined the 27 original pieces into different groups, thus creating puzzles with only one solution.
All these puzzles, produced in wooden limited editions, are now sold out. I'm re-proposing some of them, made with a 3D printer and at affordable prices, so that everyone can enjoy these fantastic and fun puzzles.
All are printed and sold under license from Haym Hirsh, who is the designer and copyright holder.
I printed Inelegant Soma as an 80mm cube, and it turned out bigger than I expected. I took a comparison photo with Neptune, which is 62mm wide.
This puzzle is printed with two different Wood filaments and so has a pleasant woody look.
Dimensions of the "cube": 80 x 80 x 80 mm + pedestal (included!)
